The Town of Vestal Recreation Department is sponsoring a youth recreational basketball league - Vestal Youth Basketball Organization. VYBO is a comprehensive basketball program open to boys and girls ages 6-11 years. Every player, regardless of ability, has an opportunity to play and enjoy the game. Participants will learn a new skill each week, as well as play games.

All 6 - 7 division games are played at Clayton Avenue Elementary Gym.

All 8 - 11 division games are played at the Vestal Middle School Gym. Team practices will be once a week - starting the week of January 6th at Glenwood Elementary School. No weekly practice for the 6 - 7 division. Team information will be mailed out mid-late December.

Coaches: 
Volunteer Coaches are needed to run this program. Our goal is to have two coaches per team in a co-coaching situation. This league has a director running the weekly skills and games. Coaches should enjoy working with children and have an interest in basketball. There is one weekly practice for the 8-11 age division, and a weekly game for all groups. It does not cost anything to be a coach and we provide a free coach's t-shirt. All coaches need to pass a background check. The form can be found here. New this year for the 8-11 age group, coaches must be CPR/AED certified per NYS Law. If you are not already certified, the Recreation Department will be holding a free class. If you are certified, we will need a copy of your certification.

Coaches Meetings/CPR Class Dates

8-11 Age group: December 17, 6PM - 6:30PM with CPR/AED class immediately following for approximately 2hrs.

6-7 Age group: December 19, 6PM - 6:30PM

This is a learning and recreational league. Participants will use T-stands to hit from and a soft rubber ball. All games are weather dependent and will be cancelled due to rain or wet conditions with no makeups. There are no practices. If your child is 6 years or older they would play Little League or in the Girls Softball League, see Community Leagues on menu on the left.

The first week we will meet for pictures only. Come meet your coaches and teammates and get your team t-shirt at the Old Central Jr. High gym on Main St. You will be mailed your team information and your picture time. On the last night, there will be a pizza party under shelters #1 & 2.

2025 Dates TBD (September - October) 

This is an instructional program. Participants will learn different skills related to field hockey such as dribbling, passing, offensive & defensive moves and shooting through practices and games.

Practices are Wednesday nights from 6pm - dark (usually between 7:00pm - 7:30pm), plus two Saturday practices from 10am - noon. Tournaments begin the third Saturday of the season and run 9am - 1pm. Tournaments are local to Broome & Tioga County. Teams are divided based on grades.

Ages:  K - 6th grades

Location: Vestal High School Baseball Field, Woodlawn Dr.

Cost: $50.00 residents, $60.00 non-residents

Add $35.00 - if you want a field hockey stick
Deadline for stick order is Monday, August 26.

Volunteer coaches are needed to run this league. Coaches must be fun-loving and have a good sense of humor. All coaches must pass a background check. A waiver must be signed for a background check before you are allowed to coach. You can download the form here and return it to the Recreation Department by mail at 516 Front St, Vestal, or drop it off at the office. Previous field hockey knowledge is not necessary but is helpful. Since all participants meet together, you'll always have the experience to draw upon. There is no cost to be a coach and we provide a free T-shirt and loaner stick.

2025 Dates TBD

The Vestal Middle School gym is open to boys and girls on Mondays and Wednesdays for supervised skills and "pick-up" games of basketball. The program runs from Monday, September 30 - Wednesday, November 6 from 7:30pm to 9:00pm. Open to 7th - 12th grades. Program is free and registration is not required.
