New York is the only state requiring, by law, that each municipality have a historian. The State law defines our responsibilities, breaking them into these four broad categories:
Research and Writing
Education and Public Presentations
Historic Preservation
Organization and Advocacy.
A report documenting the fulfillment of these responsibilities is prepared and sent to the State Historian, the County Historian, and our appointing officer.
My office is organized as a research center with resources available to those performing historical or genealogical research relating to the Town of Vestal. These resources include, but are not limited to:
Surname Files
Subject or Topic Files
Census Records
Vital Records
Town Minutes
Published Documents
Photographs
Maps
Yearbooks ... and much more!
