Welcome to the Assessment Department

The Assessor is responsible for discovering, listing, and valuing all real property according to the laws of the State of New York. Real property is defined as the sum of the tangible and intangible qualities of land and improvements (on and to).

Moreover, the Assessor is responsible to the individual property owner to ensure that the value is proper so that the owner pays no more than their fair share of property tax. Further responsibility is to all the residents to ensure that no property escapes the assessment process or is under-assessed and that no property owner receives preferential treatment.

The Assessment Department also administers real property tax exemptions as provided by the New York State Real Property Tax Law and educates the general public about Real Property Assessment Administration.

The Assessment Department does not establish tax rates or decide how much tax is to be paid -- it is responsible for establishing the market value of your property as accurately, appropriately and equitably as possible.
